Washington, DC, 08 February 2006—Journalists are invited to a press briefing on North Korea and America’s divided families. Separated for over 50 years, thousands of American and North Koreans have been unable to send letters, make phone calls or even receive confirmation that family members are alive. Time is running out for these elderly Americans.
Korean-American leaders will announce a new effort to bring another voice into our national conversation—one that focuses on the human faces of our Korean-American families.
The Eugene Bell Foundation has worked in North Korea since 1995 and now supports 44 medical institutions in North Korea. In 2001, the Korean American Coalition of the Midwest collected over 50,000 signatures supporting family reunifications and meet with with Secretary of State Colin Powell.
Speakers:
Congressman Mark Steven Kirk (Illinois, 10th District)
Mr. Jimmy D. Lee, Executive Director, White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders
Mr. Se-heum Hong, President, Korean-American Coalition of the Midwest
Ms. Cha-hee Lee Stanfield, Korean-American Coalition of the Midwest
Dr. Stephen Linton, Chairman, Eugene Bell Foundation
Ms. Alice Jean Suh, Washington Office Director, Eugene Bell Foundation
